Vuk Filipović

Assistant research professor

Group for eco-biotechnology and drug development
Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology

Vuk Filipović is a chemist whose research focuses on the development of biopolymeric and bioactive materials for applications in medicine, pharmacy, and sustainable packaging. He graduated in 2011 from the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Belgrade, where he also earned his PhD in 2020 by investigating the synthesis and characterization of biodegradable hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and poly(β-amino esters). Since 2022, he has been employed at the IMGGE, while previously (2014–2020) he worked at the Institute of Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy, focusing on the development and characterization of biodegradable polymers, their application as packaging materials, and potential biomedical uses.

His research encompasses the development of bacterial nanocellulose and “smart” hydrogels with controlled release of bioactive compounds, as well as the design of polymer systems tailored to the needs of medicine, pharmacy, and the food industry. He is particularly interested in applying microbiological and biochemical methods to obtain functional materials from renewable resources, aiming to develop sustainable technologies and new bioactive products. He was a founding member of the Young Chemists Club of Serbia and served on its board from 2009 to 2022, as well as participating in the organizational and scientific committees of several Young Chemists conferences.
