Dušan Ušjak

Assistant research professor

Group for Molecular Biology
Department of Human Molecular Genetics and Genomics

Dušan Ušjak is a Research Associate in human molecular genetics whose work is primarily focused on elucidating the genetic background and molecular mechanisms of hemostatic disorders and heart diseases. He obtained his MSc degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2016 and a PhD in Medical Sciences – Pharmacy in 2022 at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Pharmacy. During his doctoral studies at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, he investigated virulence mechanisms, biofilm formation, and antimicrobial resistance of multi-resistant bacterial pathogens. This experience provided him with a strong foundation in microbiology, experimental models of infection, and molecular techniques. Since 2021, he has been employed at the IMGGE. His research combines cell culture models, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics approaches to explore the genetic basis of thrombotic disorders and cardiological pathologies. In addition, he collaborated with the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, where he conducted hemostasis assays to assess blood coagulation and fibrinolysis balance. He has participated in several national and international projects dedicated to understanding genetic determinants of disease, advancing diagnostic tools, and investigating novel therapeutic strategies. He is also actively engaged in the education of MSc students and has contributed to the preparation of conference workshops. In recognition of his scientific work, in 2020 he received the Best Poster Award from the FEMS Journals at the FEMS Online Conference, and the same year he was awarded second prize for one of the best research presentations at the annual doctoral student event organized by the Faculty of Pharmacy. Outside of science, he enjoys music, sports and recreation, and traveling.
