Vukašin Janković is a research assistant in the Group for Eco-Biotechnology and Drug Development
at the Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology, Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering (IMGGE), University of Belgrade (Serbia). His research interests revolve around microbiology, bacterial pigments and enzymes, as well as molecular biotechnology and biology.
Currently, as part of his PhD thesis, Vukašin is researching the interaction between the bacteria from the genus Streptomyces, and synthetic textiles such as polyamide and polyamide-elastane blends. On one side, there is the study of dyeing potential of bacterial pigments on synthetic and natural textiles, and on the other side, the focus is on researching the enzymatic potential of Streptomyces in enhanced degradation of textiles in composting conditions. His work involves isolating and cultivating microorganisms from various environmental samples, optimizing conditions for the production of bacterial pigments, purifying those pigments, and applying them in textile dyeing using different formulations. In addition, he explores bacterial genomes to identify enzyme homologs related to known plastic-degrading enzymes, performs enzymatic activity tests, and evaluates the degradation potential of both natural and synthetic materials through soil burial experiments.
Vukašin earned his Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology and Physiology from the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, in 2019, followed by a Master's degree in Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in 2020. After that, he started his PhD program in Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology at the Faculty of Biology in 2020 and began working at IMGGE as a Junior Researcher in 2020.
