Jelena Đokić

Associate Research Professor

Group for Probiotics and Microbiota-Host Interaction
Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology

Jelena Đokić, PhD, had an academic training and research experience that have provided her with an excellent background in multiple biological disciplines, including biology, immunology, microbiology, and bioinformatics. During her PhD studies at the Institute for Medical Research, Military Medical Academy, she conducted research on the mechanisms of mesenchymal stem cells in the local immune process. In parallel, she was involved in research aimed at developing various protocols for producing immune cells for anti-tumor vaccines. After obtaining her PhD degree, Jelena joined the Group for Probiotics and Microbiota-Host Interactions, where she developed in vitro models to investigate host-bacteria interactions and select lactic acid bacteria (probiotics) with different immunomodulatory properties. Following these initial studies, Jelena became interested in the association between immune response and microbiota (oxygen-sensitive organisms that live in the intestines of humans and animals), and findings that the success of immune cell-based vaccines against tumors and autoimmune diseases is strongly associated with the changes in the functions of microbiota shaped her field of expertise. At this time, Jelena is dedicated to investigating the association of microbiota features and immune response as a source of new therapeutic targets for neuroinflammation characteristic of Multiple Sclerosis, but also of Alzheimer’s Disease.
