Katarina Novović

ASSOCIATE RESEARCH PROFESSOR

Group for Molecular Microbiology
Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology

Katarina Novović, PhD, earned her bachelor’s and master’s degree at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade. Katarina defended her doctoral dissertation entitled “Regulation of gene expression and diversity of CarO and Omp33-36 porins in the genus Acinetobacter spp.” in 2018 at the same faculty. Since 2012, she has pursued her entire research career within the Molecular Microbiology Group. Her research is primarily focused on the study of antimicrobial resistance and virulence of opportunistic Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria, with a particular emphasis on Acinetobacter baumannii. While most studies have investigated isolates from healthcare settings, her research has also been extended to pathogens originating from animals and the environment. Also, Katarina is the principal investigator of a project funded under the PROMIS 2023 program of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, aimed at assessing the impact of air pollution on the abundance and diversity of pathogens, resistome, and mobilome in air samples collected in the Belgrade metropolitan area. Her research interests further include the regulation of gene expression associated with antibiotic resistance and virulence, as well as the discovery of novel therapeutics to eliminate clinically relevant opportunistic pathogenic bacteria (such as quorum-sensing inhibitors, bacteriophages, and various natural and synthetic chemical compounds). Katarina has supervised four master’s theses, three of which received the “Goran Ljubijankić” Foundation Award for the best master’s thesis in the field of molecular biology, and she is currently supervising one doctoral dissertation. In addition, she has participated in several national and international projects and was awarded a fellowship from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development Republic of Serbia for a three-month postdoctoral training at the Andalusian Center for Developmental Biology (CABD) in Seville, Spain.
