Sandra Vojnović

FULL RESEARCH PROFESSOR

Group for eco-biotechnology and drug development
Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology

Dr. Sandra Vojnović is a full research professor in the Eco-biotechnology and Drug Development Group. Her research focuses on bioactive compounds, biotechnology, and the ecology of microorganisms. She earned her PhD in biological sciences from the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade. Her doctoral research investigated the mechanisms by which aminoglycoside-producing microorganisms protect themselves from their own antibiotics.

Currently, Dr. Vojnović is engaged in biotechnology research, with an emphasis on bacterial fermentations and the optimization of bioactive compound production. She is also involved in developing biotechnological processes for converting plastic waste into valuable bacterial products.

She actively participates in several EU and national projects, including BioICEP, BioECOLogics, and Twinn4MicroUp, and served as the PI of a bilateral project with Germany: "Optimization of the structure of secondary metabolites to improve their antifungal activity." She also received international training as a visiting researcher at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), where she worked on the project "Improving rapamycin production from Streptomyces hygroscopicus ATCC 29253."

Dr. Vojnović is involved in student education at various academic levels and participates in international collaborations. She is a member of the Serbian Society for Microbiology, the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB), and the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS).
