Dr. Aleksandar Pavić from the Molecular Microbiology Group is visiting the University of Utah as part of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program. In Prof. Randall Peterson’s group, he is working on generating a zebrafish model that expresses the human CFTR gene, whose mutations underlie the development of cystic fibrosis, the most common rare disease in humans, characterized by lifelong chronic lung infections. This approach is of great importance for modeling infections in zebrafish embryos as an animal model of cystic fibrosis, as well as for studying host–pathogen interactions and discovering new therapeutics.
