A genetic change that may help predict leukemia outcomes

The part of DNA that controls molecule GAS5, which normally has an antitumor effect, was studied in patients with acute myeloid leukemia. One specific variant (rs55829688) was found to be linked to lower production of the GAS5 molecule and more aggressive disease features. Laboratory experiments confirmed that this variant reduces gene activity, suggesting that its presence could weaken the protective effect of GAS5. This change may help doctors better understand which patients are at higher risk of poor outcomes and could potentially serve as a future prognostic marker.

The work was carried out in collaboration with colleagues from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade.
