Milija Jovanović

RESEARCHER

Group for Sociomicrobiology
Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology

Milija Jovanović, PhD, is a researcher in the Sociomicrobiology Group IMGGE. From 2005 to 2022, Milija was a Research Assistant at Imperial College London. One of her research areas was to understand the transcription regulation, mainly activation and initiation process, how transcription initiation is controlled by the AAA ATPase family activator proteins and how these activators are regulated by upstream cellular signals, in particular signals that control the type-III secretion system, a key factor that enables bacterial pathogens to adapt to their interaction with the plant cell. In the period April-August 2022 she worked as a Research Assistant at Queen Mary University London, working on RNA processing and repair in bacteria. In 2023, Milija joined Sociomicrobiology Group that study different signalling molecules, enzymes and secondary metabolites involved in microb-microb and host-microb interactions, developing and applying them in medicine, the pharmaceutical industry and agriculture. Milija earned a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and Physiology, University of Belgrade in 1991, followed by a Master of Science in Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering, University of Belgrade in 1995 and a PhD in 2002, University of Belgrade.
