Marija Kokić
Group for eco-biotechnology and drug development
Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology
Marija Kokić (Nenadović) is a research assistant in the Eco-biotechnology and Drug Development Group in IMGGE. Her area of expertise includes protein biochemistry, biocatalysis, polymer biodegradation, and molecular biotechnology.
Currently, Marija works on improving the biocatalytic degradation of bioplastics, specifically polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), as part of efforts to support the development of more sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. Her research includes heterologous enzyme expression, purification, characterization, immobilization, and structure–function analysis, as well as characterization of the physicochemical properties of polymeric substrates. She employs gene mutagenesis and molecular cloning techniques for enzyme engineering and is gaining training in computational enzyme engineering through several short-term scientific missions.
Marija completed her Bachelor's (2020) and Master's (2021) studies in Biochemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Belgrade, where she is now enrolled in a PhD program. She has been employed at the IMGGE since 2022, where she is carrying out her doctoral research.
