Jelena Simic. PhD, is an Assistant Research Professor and a Laboratory Manager in the Group for Eco-Biotechnology and Drug Development where she contributes to the advancement of innovative approaches in biotechnology and the study of biologically active compounds. She completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in chemistry at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Chemistry, and earned her PhD from the University of Nova Gorica – Graduate School in Slovenia. Her academic journey includes placements in both international and national research institutions, including the Technical University of Munich (TUM), where she was a DAAD fellow.

As a work package leader and contributor to several scientific projects (EcoPlastiC, BioECOLogics, BioICEP), Jelena has extensive experience in green methodologies and natural bacterial products (biopigments). Her research interests span biomedical chemistry and bioactive compounds (antimicrobial and anticancer agents), while her scientific engagement extends beyond the lab to science communication and outreach through the European Chemical Society (EuChemS) and the European Young Chemists' Network (EYCN), as well as numerous initiatives promoting chemistry in Serbia.

Jelena is recognized for her strategic approach to scientific communication, including work on social media and professional event organization, as well as science policy. Her ability to connect scientific expertise with sustainable societal practices makes her a significant voice in the field of circular bioeconomy. She remains actively engaged in education and international collaboration, continuously contributing to knowledge exchange and strengthening interdisciplinary ties in science.
