Jelena Karanović
Group for Gene Regulation in Cancer
Department of Human Molecular Genetics and Genomics
Jelena Karanović is a molecular biologist specializing in human genetics and epigenetics. She obtained a graduation degree in Molecular Biology and Physiology in 2009 at the University of Belgrade-Faculty of Biology. Her PhD dissertation, earned in 2017 at the same faculty, focused on RNA editing and serotonergic genetic variants as risk factors for suicidal behavior in psychiatric patients. Prior to employment at the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering, University of Belgrade, she spent over a decade at the Center for Human Molecular Genetics, University of Belgrade-Faculty of Biology, contributing to both research and teaching in molecular diagnostics, neuromuscular diseases, and psychiatric genetics. She has been a member of the organizing team and lecturer at the “PCR in Biological and Biomedical Research” and “Quantitative PCR” summer schools at the Petnica Science Center. Her recent work includes investigations of non-coding RNA biomarkers in cancer, participation in Serbia’s neonatal SMA screening initiative, and leading a bilateral project on the genetics of suicidal behavior with the Republic of Slovenia. She has a particular interest in leveraging genomic and transcriptomic analyses, complemented by bioinformatic approaches, to gain deeper insights into the mechanisms of human diseases. She has completed study visits at the University of Ljubljana and remains an active contributor to doctoral education (PhD course: “R in the analysis of biological data”) at the University of Belgrade-Faculty of Biology and professional training programs in DNA sequencing and bioinformatics at the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering, University of Belgrade. She is a member of scientific communities and a participant in national and international projects.
