Ivana Morić, PhD, is a molecular biologist with extensive research experience in microbiology. She graduated from the Department of Molecular Biology and Physiology at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, where she also defended her magister’s thesis on the relationship between the most common respiratory infections and asthma exacerbations in adults. The research was conducted in the Laboratory of Prof. Sebastian Johnson at the School of Medicine, the University of Southampton, UK. After completing magister’s degree, she continued her research at the Argonne National Laboratory at Advanced Photon Source in the USA, as part of Dr. Ian McNulty's group. The focus of her work was the survival mechanisms of intracellular bacteria of the genus Mycobacterium, which she studied as part of her doctoral thesis, defended at the Faculty of Biology in Belgrade in 2006.
During her career, she also studied resistance mechanisms in antibiotic-producing bacteria, microbial diversity, and biodeterioration of cultural heritage. In recent years, she has been involved in characterizing new bioactive compounds with antimicrobial, anti-virulent, and anti-biofilm activities. In parallel, she also works on developing a method for rapid diagnostics of biofilm presence to improve therapeutic outcomes and prevent chronic infections. She supervised one doctoral dissertation and three bachelor's and master's theses.
Dr. Morić completed a short educational program in bioinformatics for biologists at the Faculty of Computer Science, Union University. Since the founding of the Center for Genome Sequencing and Bioinformatics, she has been actively involved in all Center activities and was recently appointed deputy head. Since 2007, she has been engaged in PhD studies at the Faculty of Biology in Belgrade as a lecturer of the course on basic application of bioinformatics tools. She is also one of the main organizers of the international bioinformatics conference held in Belgrade (BelBi).
