Ivana Aleksic, PhD, is a Senior Research Associate in the Group for Ecobiotechnology and Drug Development, dedicated to advancing innovative and sustainable biotechnological solutions through multidisciplinary research on microorganisms, bioactive compounds, and enzymes.
She earned her PhD in Biology in 2019 from the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, where she previously obtained her BSc (2014) and MSc (2015) degrees. Throughout her career, she has gained experience at international research centers, including a postdoctoral appointment at the Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry PAN in Krakow (Poland) and a research stay at Imperial College London (UK) as a recipient of the prestigious FEMS Research Fellowship.
Her research encompasses the study of bioactive compounds, microbial biofilms, and bacterial communication, the application of the Danio rerio model organism in toxicology studies, and the development of biocatalytic and biotechnological processes with a special focus on enzymes. She has actively participated in national and international projects, including BioECOLogics and BioICEP (H2020), and currently serves as the Project Ambassador of the TwInn4MicroUp project, contributing to enhancing the Institute’s international visibility and scientific collaboration.
Through her work, she integrates innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to develop sustainable technologies in green biotechnology, bridging fundamental research with practical applications in healthcare, industry, and environmental protection. She actively promotes science by participating in the European Researchers’ Night and through her engagement in professional societies, including the Serbian Society for Microbiology and the Serbian Genetic Society.
