Dragana Bosnić

Assistant Research Professor

Group for plant molecular biology
Department of Microbiology and Plant Biology

Dragana Bosnić, PhD, graduated from the Biology program at the Faculty of Biology in Belgrade, and has been working at the IMGGE since 2011. She completed her doctorate in plant molecular biology in 2020. Her passion are plants under stress. During her doctoral studies, she focused on silicon - how this element helps plants cope with toxic metals. Now she wants to go a step further and discover which small RNAs and key genes are activated when plants use silicon as protection. She also investigates how plants react when they lack nutrients. Through collaboration with national and international laboratories, she attempts to uncover the molecular secrets of these plant responses. Another important field of her work are nematodes - those tiny worms that attack roots. She developed a test for their detection, for which she filed a national patent application. Recently, Dragana's focus has been on the fascinating communication between plants and beneficial bacteria. She explores how they communicate using extracellular vesicles and small RNAs that bacteria send as messages. Bioinformatics is particularly interesting to her - she enjoys combining laboratory work with computational analyses. She participates in important national and international projects, from bilateral to innovation projects. In addition to research, she enjoys promoting science - she mentors many talented students and participates in science popularization projects funded by EU funds.
