Probiotic lactobacilli are known for their ability to modulate the immune system, however their role on cutaneous immunity remains largely unknown. Therefore, this project is focused on understanding mechanisms of epidermal response to lactobacilli in skin repair and intracellular infection. We hypothesize that modulation of cutaneous immunity by probiotic lactobacilli could lead to eradication of intracellular pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus) and enhanced wound healing which represent the starting point for formulation of skin probiotic as wound therapeutic.
