Laboratory for Human Molecular Genetics (LHMG) has a long standing expertise in studying the expression of human SOX genes and the roles of transcriptional factors, signaling pathways and epigenetic mechanisms in the regulation of their activities. In addition, we investigate the effects of the modulations of SOX genes expression on the processes of in vitro neurogenesis and acquisition of malignant phenotype.

LHMG is studying mitochondrial DNA diversity of contemporary Serbian population which represents a foundation for further comparative analysis of ancient populations that inhabited the region of Serbia.

One of our research interests is focused on testing the potential antitumor and neuroprotective effects of bioactive and synthetic compounds. Therapeutic potential is evaluated by applying in vitro tests for cell viability, intracellular stress, proliferation, apoptosis, adhesion and migration.

LHMG provides molecular diagnostics of microdeletion syndromes using Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH), analysis of sperm DNA fragmentation which complements the existing protocols for sterility therapy, as well as genetic markers assisted selection for economic trait loci in domestic animals.

LHMG is modern well-equipped laboratory with highly competent researchers in the field of human molecular genetics. LHMG associates actively participate in theoretical education and practical training of students at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade.
