Bio Innovation of a Circular Economy for Plastics (BioICEP)

Principal Investigator: Margaret Fournet, PhD, Athlone Institute of Technology, Ireland

The BioICEP EU-China H2020 project represents suitable route to mitigate against the unintended consequences of plastic pollution. This pan European-Chinese collaboration includes partners from nine countries, representing some of the world’s most polluted regions. This flagship €7M project is coordinated by Athlone Institute of Technology (Athlone, Ireland).

Plastics are ubiquitous with our modern lifestyles and have facilitated much of our social, technical, and economic advancement. However, plastic now permeates every corner of our planet and countries including Ireland continue to exceed annual greenhouse gas emission allocations. BioICEP will develop negative carbon footprint technologies for the biotransformation of plastic waste stockpiles into equivalent ‘drop in’ bioplastic products.

The coordinator for IMGGE is Jasmina Nikodinovic-Runic, PhD.
