Genetic testing for lactose intolerance

Lactose intolerance represents a condition where people are unable to digest sugar named lactase, found in milk and dairy products. This is a consequence of not producing enough of the enzyme called lactase, which digests lactose. The symptoms of lactose intolerance include: flatulence (wind), diarrhoea, bloated stomach, stomach cramps and pains, stomach rumbling and feeling sick after eating lactose containing food. The lactose intolerance can be primary or secondary. Primary lactose intolerance is caused by mutation in the regulatory region of lactase gene (LCT). DNA analysis is indicated in patients with the above mentioned symptoms. The result obtained can also help in treatment of other conditions, such as celiac disease, Crohn’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease.
