RESEARCH INTEREST

The main research interest is related to isolation and molecular characterization of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and other Gram-positive and Gram-negative food-related microorganisms from different ecological niches, genome sequencing and annotation, probiotic characterization of lactobacilli as well as the standardization of methods for detection and molecular typing of Listeria sp. and Salmonella sp. through the food chain. Ongoing projects are related to the characterization of the genes and factors involved in probiotic potential of lactobacilli (exopolysaccharides, aggregation factors, bacteriocins, proteinases). Besides, development of novel therapeutic strategies for treatment of diverse diseases and designing the formulations for functional starter cultures for novel foods and feeds.
