The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The date was chosen to mark the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992. The United Nations designated 2011–2020 as the Decade on Biodiversity.
Biodiversity generally refers to the variety and variability of life on Earth. It is an essential component of nature and it ensures the survival of human species by providing food, fuel, shelter, medicines and other resources. The richness of biodiversity can be affected by different factors, such as climatic conditions, land use, and pollution.
