After Goran Ljubijankić's tragic death his parents, Danica and Rasim Ljubijankić, initiated and financially supported establishment of the Foundation named “Goran Ljubijankić”. Foundation was established on July 1, 2003 by the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Belgrade, Yugoslavia in which Goran spent his most productive years of scientific research. The establishing of the Foundation, besides Goran's parents and his home Institute, was helped by his colleagues form the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Trieste, Italy. The aim of the Foundation is to give support to young and promising scientists from our country in the field of Molecular Biology.

Foundation “Goran Ljubijankić” will give awards every January 30, on Goran's birthday, to the most outstanding young researchers in the field of Molecular Biology.

Goran Ljubijankić was born January 30, 1961 in Kragujevac, in a family of Danica and Rasim Ljubijankić. He graduated high school in his home town.

In 1985 he graduated Molecular Biology and Physiology at University of Belgrade. One year later he becomes research trainee in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Centre of Genetic Engineering.

After he received M.Sc. in Molecular Biology in 1992 he joined International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Trieste, Italy where he completed experimental part of his Ph.D. thesis. In 1996 Goran returned to the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering and gathered a team of young scientists from which the Laboratory of Molecular Biotechnology was established in 1999. 

Since 1998 he has been Associated Professor for Basics of Molecular Biology on the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade. He was known for his wide education, enthusiasm and undivided devotion to the scientific research.

Goran Ljubijankić has tragically lost his life on April 17, 2002. His distinguished knowledge, willingness to listen and help his friends and colleagues, as well as his sharp sense of humour, will remain in the memory of those who had a privilege of knowing him.
