Research interests

I started my scientific career in the field of classical plant physiology and continued in the fields of conservation biology and population genetics (working on intra-specific genetic processes), phylogeny (analysing supra-specific genetic patterns) and phylogeography which is linking these fields. This is because I realized that only by combining methodologies and approaches of these different scientific fields and employing a multidisciplinary approach, I was able to better understand evolutionary relations among plant species as well as genetic and other processes that have led to the current levels of plant biodiversity, and genetic structuring and distribution of plant populations. I work predominantly with natural populations and species from the Balkans, which is a genetically understudied centre of diversity and endemism, and I apply my knowledge to domesticated plants and other systems (human and animal) as well.
