Jelena Begovic, PhD is the acting director of IMGGE since 2013. Since 2015, she is Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology. She is also a delegate of the Republic of Serbia in the Board of Governors of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Italy, as well as the liaison officer of this organization for Serbia. She is a member of the Association of Microbiologists of Serbia, Serbian Genetic Society and the American Society of Microbiology (ASM). She is a member of the review board of the Center for the Promotion of Science's magazine Elements.
Her scientific career is tied to the lactic acid bacteria including resistance problems in LAB and other not so friendly bacteria to antibiotics, and the search for new probiotics that may find wide application in human and veterinary medicine. She is highly interested in connecting fundamental research with practice, as well as the development of innovation.
