Laboratory for Plant Molecular Biology

The Laboratory for Plant Molecular Biology has been established in 2002. Our research group is interested in diverse aspects of Plant Molecular Biology:

  • plant response mechanisms to various abiotic stresses (mineral stresses: from nutrient deficiency to the excess of essential and other mineral elements, environmental stresses: drought, salinity, temperature, etc) on transcriptional and posttranscriptional level
  • research in fields of microevolution (population genetics), phylogeography and macroevolution (phylogenetics) of plants important for agronomy and horticulture.
  • isolation and characterization of bioactive phenolic compounds from plants; testing for bioavailability and effects on human cell lines
  • study of fungal pathogenesis and homologous recombination using Ustilago maydis as a model system

At the Laboratory for Plant Molecular Biology, the PCR method for detection, identification and quantification of genetic modification in plant material and food/feed products has been developed and accredited according to SRPS ISO/IEC 17025.

Laboratory for Molecular Microbiology

Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology (LMM) has a unique bacterial collection encompassing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from fermented dairy products - made in households according to traditional recipes as well as isolates of human origin.

From this collection strains with probiotic potential are selected and studied using in vitro molecular methods and in vivo experiments on different laboratory animals. In this way, we examine the molecular basis of the beneficial effect of selected probiotics on the specific human diseases including, inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes. The final goal is application of the living probiotics in the form of functional food and the discovery of bioactive compounds with health improvement effects. Moreover, due to necessity to use particular LAB in the production of fermented milk products with geographical origin, part of the research is devoted on studies of the production and mechanisms of action of proteinases and bacteriocins.

Due to constant research and services development, design and the construction of molecular tools like plasmids, cosmids, expression vectors, is one of the priorities for LMM.

LMM is also focused on molecular basis of antibiotic resistance of clinical isolates, including dissemination and evolution of tantibiotic resistance genes. Moreover, special importance is given to phenomenon of bacterial colonization of patients with rare diseases, such as cystic fibrosis.

Laboratory provides services in the field of molecular identification and genotyping of bacteria, construction of unique starter cultures for probiotic dairy drinks, yoghurts and semi-hard cheeses and tailored made investigations.

Laboratory for Microbial Molecular Genetics and Ecology

The core expertise of the Laboratory for Microbial Molecular Genetics and Ecology is microbial molecular biology and ecology which we apply to a wide range of areas.

Research interests of LMMGE are biotechnology, molecular genetics, biochemistry and ecology of microorganisms and microbial communities. As former Laboratory for Molecular Genetics of Actinomycetes, we have unique collection of Streptomyces and other soil actinomycetes and we continue our bioprospecting for novel bioactive microbial compounds and biotechnologically relevant enzymes.

With lab members’ backgrounds in microbiology, molecular genetics, synthetic chemistry, veterinary science, fermentation technology, and biocatalysis, and long standing collaborations with industrial microbiologists, biochemical engineers, medical mycologists, and chemists in particular, we use microbial molecular and synthetic biology in addressing a wide range of interesting problems:

  • Biotechnology (offering sustainable and greener solutions to synthesis of valuable molecules and biomaterials including waste conversion to value-added materials);
  • Biocatalysis (discovery and engineering of novel biocatalysts for the production of chiral molecules, and improvement of biocatalytic processes);
  • Bioremediations (aromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals) and biodeteriorations (cultural heritage paintings, books, monuments);
  • Production and characterization of bioactive compounds (Streptomyces culture collection);
  • Novel approaches in antimicrobial treatments (microbial communication modulating molecules; virulence modulating agents; host-pathogen interactions; activity against microbial biofilms; antifungal therapy);
  • Taxonomic assessment of microbial communities using metagenomic approaches and taxonomic identification of bacterial isolates through 16S sequence analysis.

LMMGE is continually seeking new collaborations and is offering services that include microbiological analysis, analysis and characterization of bioactive molecules, and directed evolution of enzymes.

Laboratory for Human Molecular Genetics

The transcriptional regulation of human SOX genes expression has been a long-standing major interest of the Laboratory for Human Molecular Genetics (LHMG). Ongoing research projects are focused on the roles of human SOX genes in processes of in vitro neurogenesis and oncogenic transformation of cells. Also, we study complex interplay of transcription factors, epigenetic mechanisms and different signaling pathways (Sonic Hedgehog – SHH and Wnt) involved in the control of human SOX genes expression. The current research will provide further insights into the roles of human SOX genes in cell pluripotency maintenance, differentiation, proliferation, migration, adhesion and apoptosis.

LHMG conduct analyses of variability of mitochondrial DNA, which present foundation for analysis of diversity of contemporary Serbian population, as well as, for further comparative research of ancient populations that inhabited Serbia area.

One of our research interests is focused on testing the bioactive components from plants and edible mushrooms and analyzing their therapeutic potential by applying in vitro tests for cytotoxity, antioxidative activity, cell adhesion and cell migratory capacity.

LHMG provides molecular diagnostics of microdeletion syndromes using Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH), analyses of DNA fragmentation of spermatozoids which complements the existing protocols for sterility therapy and genetic markers assisted selection for economic trait loci in domestic animals.
LHMG is modern well-equipped laboratory with highly competent researchers in the field of human molecular genetics.
